  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup shredded whole milk mozzarella cheese
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup ketchup or BBQ sauce (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the diced onion and minced garlic until fragrant and translucent (about 5 minutes).
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, sautéed onion and garlic, egg, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  4. Shape half of the meat mixture into a rectangle on parchment paper. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella down the center.
  5. Fold the sides of the meat mixture over the cheese to encase it completely. Place seam-side down on the baking sheet and top with ketchup or BBQ sauce.
  6. Bake for approximately 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C). Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
